Your Emotional Well-being is Important!

Written by Nihinlolawa

Many times, people tend to underrate the emotional well-being of others even when they are so close. Rich people, poor ones, and even our most cheerful friend, neighbour, colleague, or acquaintance dies of depression, commits suicide, acts strangely or unusual, feels lost and we kept wondering what could have happened.

We ask questions like, how come she did this? Why did I not notice anything? It doesn’t seem like something was wrong the last time I spoke with him and a lot of comments with expressions keep flowing on our lips and mind whenever something strange happens to an individual due to his or her mental struggle.

According to the World Health Organisation(WHO), ” Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realises his or her abilities, and he/she is able to cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and can also contribute to his or her community.”
The above means that mental health is a thing of the mind, that is, it can be personal. From the outside, we might feel that an individual is doing well, performing tasks, he or she might even look productive to us, but internally, they are struggling with mental illness.

A lot of things are involved in a person’s mental health, it can be physical, psychological, social, or biological and it can reflect in both children and adults. Although a lot of people cover up what might be tormenting them or having a massive effect on their mental health, we still have others who can speak up depending on how we communicate with them. Some might express their worries jokingly and laugh over them, but psychologically they are down, while some will come out plain in dishing out their mental illness or struggle.

There are various ways people suffer from mental illness. These include;
● Depression
● Anxiety disorder
● Bipolar disorder
● Dementia
● Attention deficit or hyperactivity disorder
● Schizophrenia
● Obsessive-compulsive disorder
● Autism
● Post-traumatic stress and a host of others.
Statistics have shown that Nigeria has more than 1.5 million cases of depression per year. In May 2021, the World Health Organisation released its statistics on mental health and indicates that the global majority estimate for different mental illnesses or disorders was 28.0% for depression; 26.9 % for anxiety; 24.1% for post-traumatic stress symptoms; 36.5 % for stress; 50.0 % for psychological distress and 27.6 % for sleep problems.
According to research the reasons for mental struggle include, trauma, rape, economic retrenchment, marriage crisis, low self-esteem, bullying, loneliness, and insecurity among others.

The outcome of mental illness can not be overemphasised. It has a huge effect on the victims as they might become the shadow of themselves which will lead to excessive thinking and a change in mood and attitude. It might also lead to critical health conditions or death.

SYMPTOMS OF POOR MENTAL HEALTH
These symptoms can be physical, emotional, or psychological. They include;

HOW TO MAINTAIN GOOD MENTAL HEALTH
Although mental illness indeed eats deep and is horrible, there is always a way out of it. People having a bad time due to their mental health can make it out of it.
The following are things we can do to maintain good mental health or come out of a mental illness.

●Talk to a reliable person
● Ask for help
● Stay away from an environment, people, or things that can make you mentally disabled
● Do things that make you happy often.
● Visit a therapist
● Stay away from alcoholic beverages
● Take a break
● Eat nutritional food
● Learn to deal with stress
In serious cases, use antidepressant medicines and treat psychosis with antipsychotic
medicines. Government and related organisations should also plan advocacy activities, go on an anti-stigma campaign, support mental health units, and develop policies that will improve. Know that mental health is an important part of your health and there is no health without mental health. Take care of yourself and examine yourself often.
