The word contraception rings a bell, right? Yes, the contraception of contraceptives . Contraception, many individuals are likely to explain in basic form what this means especially the young adults. They must have heard of it during sex education talks with peers, parents, big sisters, partners, public speakers, or probably a family planning section with a doctor, counselor, and religious leaders.

Oxford dictionary defines contraception as the deliberate use of artificial methods or other techniques to prevent pregnancy as a consequence of sexual intercourse. It simply means that it is any method used to prevent pregnancy.

There are several examples of contraception. These include;

Also, 308 million used modern contraceptives in 2017 preventing 308 million unintended pregnancies and 23 million adolescents have an unmet need for modern contraception and are thus at elevated risk of unintended pregnancy.

What Are The Guidelines For Contraception?

According to the World Health Organization{WHO}, the following are the guidelines for contraception;

● Medical eligibility criteria for contraceptive use.

● Contraceptive eligibility for women at high risk of HIV.

● Task sharing to improve access to family planning/contraception.

● To manage PCOS{Polycystic Ovary Syndrome}, PMS{Premenstrual Syndrome}, and PMDD {Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder }. Another reason why some people used contraceptives is to help irregular periods, stop periods, reduce pain during periods and decrease acne and excessive body hair growth( National Coalition for Sexual Health:2017).

What Are The Advantages Of Contraception?

● It helps the family to plan when to have children, how to have them, and their age difference.

● It helps to regulate the population of a nation which might affect the economy and services of the country.

● It reduces teenage and early pregnancies.

● It reduces the risk of problems in pregnancy.

● It erases the need for abortion.

● It also reduces infant deaths as people plan their pregnancies so that they can give their babies the best care before and after delivery.

● It helps eliminate hormonal acne.

● It lessens the risk of uterine cancer, ovarian cyst, and anemia. Etc.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Contraception?

● Complications

● A difficult reversal in vasectomy

● Infection

● Risk of haematoma

● It might increase or reduce sex drive.

● Blood clots

● Weight gain

● Tenderness in breasts

● Combined pills can increase your blood pressure.

● The contraceptive patch can slightly increase the risk of breast and cervical cancer.

● Deaths from complications. Contraception can take place before pregnancy or after pregnancy depending on your plan and what you aim to achieve or prevent. Make sure you do comprehensive research on any method you choose to opt for to avoid regrets. Your health and safety are more important.
